Dental Crowns, Inlays and Onlays

Restoration of a tooth damaged by decay, fracture, loss of a filling or one tooth  has undergone root canal therapy, is accomplished efficiently and effectively through the application of a crown, inlay or onlay.

Designed to cover the entire tooth to your gum line, and sculptured from high-grade porcelain, a crown is placed when the damage sustained by a tooth is such that a filling is not adequate to restore it to full function or appearance.

Having a crown secured is a two step process;

  • Firstly, the tooth receiving the crown must be reshaped. Once shaped, a mould is taken so your replacement crown can be fabricated in a dental laboratory, whilst this is being made, you will receive a temporary crown so you can still have a full smile.

  • At your second appointment, your temporary crown is removed and the permanent replacement is checked for comfort and fit, before being bonded with specially developed dental cement. Your new permanent crown will look, feel and function just like your natural teeth.

Where a crown is utilised for a tooth that has had severe decay or major trauma, inlays and onlays are used for teeth requiring mild to moderate restorative treatment and is achieved with minimal interference to the tooth structure.

A dental inlay, as the name suggests, is used to rectify damage in the indented or cusp surface structure of back teeth, or they can be placed as replacements for old or damaged amalgam (silver) fillings, to create a more natural looking mouth. The tooth is prepared by removing the decay, prior to taking a moulded impression, in a similar process to that used for a crown. Also made from hard porcelain material in a dental laboratory, an inlay, when bonded into position, seals the tooth more efficiently than an amalgam filling.

A porcelain onlay is utilised to repair a tooth where the damage sustained is too extensive for an inlay to be used, this may have been caused through decay or loss of a large filling. An onlay requires the same diligent preparation and precision bonding as an inlay or a crown. When secured into place, your new onlay can absorb up to 75% more chewing force than a filling.

The E4D CAD/CAM Solution

The E4D CAD/CAM Solution is an innovation in same day dentistry. Traditionally a dental crown needed to be prepared at one appointment, made in a laboratory and then fitted at a subsequent appointment. With the E4D (in clinically suitable cases) the tooth to be crowned is prepared and the preparation recorded with the CAD/CAM camera. This digital recording is then used to design the restoration. The designed restoration is then milled from a block of porcelain while you wait. The restoration is then fitted and tested and finally polished, all in one time-saving appointment.
