Dental Bridges Brisbane

Missing teeth can cause a vast array of dental health issues. When you have a tooth missing it can affect your other teeth, your bite and jaw alignment. Your teeth on either side of the space can lean into the gap becoming crooked and difficult to clean. This can also cause gaps to develop between your other teeth as they too can move because of space created by your missing tooth or teeth. Missing teeth can also be a cause of embarrassment and contribute to a low self-esteem and lack of confidence in social and professional situations. They also increase the load of your bite on the remaining teeth.

What are dental bridges?

Bridges are secured by crowns bonded onto your natural teeth on either side of the space. By filling this space with a high quality porcelain prosthetic replacement, the Jephson Street Dental team can prevent these problems occurring.

The preparation for a bridge closely mirrors that for a single crown. The “anchoring” teeth, those to which the crowns will be secured, are carefully prepared and reshaped so they match seamlessly with your surrounding teeth in size and shape when your crowns are secured.

A moulded impression is made and a temporary bridge may be worn while your permanent bridge is being constructed. The temporary restoration will allow full-mouth appearance and function.

When your new permanent replacement bridge is ready, the temporary restoration is removed and the permanent bridge is secured with strong dental bonding cement. This rejuvenates your smile and enhances your self-esteem whilst restoring function and confidence.

Our highly qualified hygienist can demonstrate the most effective brushing and flossing techniques for caring for your new bridge, crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers.

Overview of dental bridges

As the name suggests, dental bridges help to bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The dental appliance consists of prosthetic teeth (pontic) that are attached to teeth that support the bridge (abutments) on both ends. As a popular teeth replacement option, dental bridges create healthy looking and aesthetically pleasing results.

Over the last few years, this cosmetic dental appliance has undergone a major transformation. Due to the improved quality of materials and technological craftsmanship of dental artisans, today’s dental bridges are more robust and look like real teeth – possessing an uncanny blend of strength and natural aesthetics.

The different types of bridges include: Fixed (non-removable), partial, permanent, removable or temporary. The fixed dental bridge is permanently placed and cannot be removed unless by our professional Brisbane dentists. They offer a more stable solution to removable partial dentures. There are many types of materials used to make bridges, including: Porcelain, gold, alloy, acrylic, cast metal, porcelain fused metal, etc.

At Jephson Steet Dental, our cosmetic dental experts create accurate dental restorations that are durable and virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. We recommend porcelain bridges for their exceptional strength and beauty. If well taken care of, porcelain bridges can last for more than a decade.

A dental bridge makes an excellent choice and safe solution for replacing missing tooth and recovering your beautiful smile.

Type of dental bridges

The three main types are: Cantilever, Traditional and Resin Bonded. The Cantilever bridge is used when there is only one abutment tooth on one side of the gap. An abutment refers to the connecting element that supports the prosthetic bridge.

Traditional bridges are more popularly used in cosmetic dentistry, where the false tooth used to cover the gap is attached to a crown that is placed on a neighbouring abutment tooth. Traditional bridges are usually made of ceramics or porcelain for optimum beauty and strength. Resin Bonded types have a cast metal framework where the prosthetic teeth is attached to a metal wing (retainer), which in turn is affixed to both the abutment teeth. The false teeth or pontics are precisely positioned to cover the gap.

The type you choose really depends on your situation. The resin-retained bridge makes a great option for replacing many missing teeth. One major benefit of this type of bridge is that it doesn’t require excessive tooth preparation for the abutment teeth. Although it presents the more affordable option, it also requires that your surrounding teeth have little or no damage.

The cantilever bridge works best for missing frontal teeth, although it is more costly than the resin bonded option. The traditional bridge is held in position by two porcelain crowns, attached to the abutment teeth on either side of the gap. An ideal option for replacing one or more missing tooth, the traditional bridge is permanently fixed and cannot be removed whenever you want to.

Benefits of the dental bridge

Dental bridges are frequently used for a variety of tooth loss situations. They have come a long way as one of the safest and most durable methods for restoring beauty to your smile and overall facial aesthetics.

Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of this widely popular dental appliance:

  • Prevents adjacent tooth from tilting, drifting or shifting toward the gap left by the missing teeth.
  • Enhances the aesthetics of your smile with natural looking prosthetic teeth
  • Restores beauty and function to your missing teeth. Your chewing efficiency greatly improves as the forces in your bite are equally distributed following the installation of bridges.
  • Supports your jawbone and cheeks to maintain the original facial shape. Bridges prevent a droopy countenance that may result from missing teeth.
  • Regains your ability to eat and speak properly
  • Corrects bad bites while giving you a well-aligned smile.
  • More affordable and less invasive compared to dental implants or other restorative dental procedures.
  • Saves time – requiring only two visits to the dentist.
  • Durable – lasting more than 10 years if you practice proper oral hygiene.

Want to solve your tooth loss problem? A dental bridge offers a natural looking and affordable solution that will precisely cover the gaps.
