Children's Dentistry

At Jephson Street Dental your child’s dental health is a priority. We have a professional children’s therapist who will guide your children through their three main stages of dental development; giving advice on teething, oral hygiene, and preventative measures such as diet and fluoride supplements.

Our Children’s therapist is dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teenage years. The very young, pre-teens and teenagers all need different approaches in guiding their dental growth and development, to help them avoid future dental problems.

Good oral health for your baby should start even before they receive their first tooth by wiping their gums gently with a soft damp cloth. Every baby will develop teeth at different ages, but generally they will begin to emerge between four to seven months of age. Usually the first teeth to appear are the two front lower teeth (central incisors), and by around age three they should have all twenty of their primary teeth.

Having healthy teeth is important for your baby’s general health and development as this will allow them to chew food efficiently and learn to sound words correctly as they learn to talk. It is recommended their first visit to the Jephson Street Dental team is around their first birthday, this will enable us to check for any development problems with their teeth, gums and jaw.

Our friendly dental therapist has undertaken extra training to specialise in dental treatment for children. Many parents like to incorporate their baby’s first visit with their own routine care appointment.IT will also help your child to develop a good relationship with our team and be more comfortable if they see you having your teeth examined as well.

After teeth have emerged you can brush them with a soft bristled baby toothbrush and water, toothpaste should not be added until they are able to spit it out, when they are around age three, then add a small dab of fluoride toothpaste to their brush. By showing your child how to brush at the same time as you do, they learn that it is a normal daily routine.

To help prevent early childhood tooth decay, it is advisable not to put your baby or young child to bed with a bottle containing milk or juice, as this can expose their teeth and gums to sugar for a prolonged period of time. This can result in early tooth decay problems and may affect the emergence of their permanent teeth. (Plain water is a preferred option).

An ongoing oral hygiene routine of brushing twice a day and regular appointments every twelve months with our dental therapist will keep your child’s teeth in optimal health and allow for early intervention if any problems begin to develop. This could mean a significant reduction in corrective treatment, time, and much less expense.

The team at Jephson Street Dental are committed to giving your child the best start to a lifetime of good oral health, so they can keep their natural teeth looking good for life.
